The Hawaii County Fire Department is investigating a fire that destroyed a single-story home in Hilo late Friday evening.

Responding to the 11:34 p.m. call, firefighters discovered the fire at the Kopaa Street house was “fully involved.” They were able to control the fire at 12:08 a.m. Saturday, prevent it from spreading and extinguished it at 12:25 a.m. by using approximately 6,100 gallons of water.

The home consisted of wooden flooring sandwiched between two 40-foot metal containers. Fire officials estimated the loss at $120,000.

The property’s owner and occupant were unknown, as of press time. The cause of the fire was also undetermined.
